What Is Nutrition and Dietetics? The Importance of Healthy Eating

Nutrition and diet specialists work to improve people’s quality of life. They determine individuals’ nutritional needs. They prepare and implement adequate and balanced nutrition programs. They also arrange disease-specific diets.

They provide education and counseling services for healthy eating practices. Additionally, quality control and food safety are ensured in organizations providing mass nutrition services. They take on duties in the management and organization of food service.

TOBB ETU University Hospital Nutrition and Dietetics Department protects and improves individuals’ health. This department prepares programs according to the principles of nutritional science to improve quality of life.

It organizes individual and mass nutrition programs. It also plans diet programs appropriate for medical and surgical treatments. It provides necessary training as well.

Nutrition education enables individuals to abandon incorrect practices in nutrition and use their available resources wisely. Nutrition and lifestyle errors that cause weight gain should be correctly identified. Goals for reaching ideal weight should be clear. Information should be obtained from correct sources and applied.

What Is Preventive Nutrition?

Taking precautions before nutritional problems begin in the community is important. The existing nutritional status should be corrected. Adequate and balanced nutrition is essential for protecting and improving health.

Nutrition specialists are an important part of the preventive and therapeutic healthcare professionals team. They are not only concerned with weight loss goals and popular diet recipes.

They prepare sustainable, special nutrition programs that improve quality of life and health. These programs help reduce the negative effects of chronic diseases. They also provide education and follow-up.

Consuming adequate amounts of healthy and natural foods from all food groups is important. Foods containing antioxidant vitamins and minerals should be selected.

Ready-made processed foods should be avoided. Correct cooking and storage methods should be used. This forms the basis of the preventive nutrition plan.

Nutrition in Children

The goal is to instill good eating habits with adequate and balanced nutrition recommendations. This supports healthy growth and development. Daily energy intake varies according to age, gender, physical activity, and weight. Daily meal frequency should be at least 4 meals.

Carbohydrates, protein, vitamins, minerals, and fats should be adequate in the nutrition program. Meals should be prepared with healthy foods. At least one meal will be eaten outside the home, usually at school or kindergarten. Therefore, menus at these centers should be arranged according to need.

Protecting children from obesity is easier than trying to resolve obesity after it occurs. Children should receive healthy eating education in the preschool period. Appropriate physical activities should be planned. Additionally, behavior change should be developed.

Nutrition in Adolescence

The body changes rapidly during adolescence. This situation can create negative body perception. Wrong diet and nutrition can lead to health problems. Excessive fat accumulation during adolescence can lead to physical and mental problems.

Obesity can also cause various diseases. It can especially damage the child’s self-confidence, prevent participation in social activities and sports activities, and make it difficult to make friends. Adequate and balanced nutrition, correct physical activity, and regular sleep are important for healthy development. These elements can eliminate the problem.

Nutrition During Pregnancy and Lactation

During pregnancy and lactation, a personalized nutrition program should be prepared. This helps expectant mothers have a more comfortable process.

Adequate and balanced nutrition during pregnancy is important. This meets physiological energy and nutrient needs. It also supports the baby’s normal development and protects the mother’s health. Therefore, an appropriate nutrition program should be created.

During lactation, the necessary energy and nutrients for breast milk are provided. A nutrition program specific to this period is prepared. The goal is to support feeding the baby with breast milk for at least 6 months.

Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that occurs when blood sugar measurements are occasionally high. Blood sugar can be controlled with an appropriate nutrition program.
